colleague critique #2

Hey, Renee, I liked this article on the legalization of marijuana in Texas. It was a very effective argument on why Texas should do it. With the positive economic increase, that come with the legalization. It would also be beneficial for medical purposes. I personally would love to see marijuana legalized in the near future. The Texas economy would grow and many people who are going through illnesses would have great benefit as well. More good would come out of this than anything else.

Abbott: Campus carry could have prevented Ohio State attack

In this article, Gov. Abbott talks about the Ohio State attack. He states that if there was campus carry that the attack could have been prevented.Abbott said "someone would "think twice" about carrying out such an attack in Texas due to its campus carry law." I feel like the statement that he has given is not right. I believe that  campus carry would not have stopped the attack. I think that having guns on campus would bring a more negative effect than a positive one. Abbott states that "It's instances like this where kids on campus could have guns, where they could have been able to respond initially," Abbott said. "I think that on a college campus like here in Texas, people will think twice before waging an attack like this knowing that they could be gunned down immediately." I feel like that having students shoot someone is a huge safety issue. alongside that Having college students with high amounts of stress with the possession of firearms would probably not be a good idea. Abbott also stated "It is insanity that the United States of America will not safeguard our people by bringing in people from terrorist-sponsored nations" I do not think that students should be the one to defend in situations like that. The police should be the ones to fight the crazy people. The issue of the matter is not with the student but with the local and campus police to fight the ones to cause the terror.

colleague critique

Hey, Priscila I can see where you are coming from but I will have to disagree. In many cases, the people who are wanting to own and carry a firearm are normal people. These are usually the ones want to protect themselves and their families from the crazy people you talk about. In many cases where there are more firearms, the likelihood for violent crimes to occur is greatly reduced. By allowing open carry in Texas it will allow Texans to easily utilize their second amendment rights. I personally think that it is the right choice for Texas to open carry.

Charlie Strong and guns

In the article Charlie Strong and guns and campus carry talks about how Strong and how he has been able to ban his players owning handguns. The University of Texas has made it clear. And, in a preliminary ruling in a pending lawsuit, a federal judge has made it clear. Under the new campus carry law, UT personnel cannot ban students with handgun licenses from bringing those guns, concealed, to class. But despite the university's rule Strong has banned his players from owning guns. In this article John Bianco, UT assistant athletic director for media relations, told me the no-guns rule is not a ban on legal gun ownership. But there are restrictions on where players’ guns can be carried.
The author Ken Herman brings the question of should the professors be able to ban their students of carrying guns like strong has. The professors are subject to university discipline if they ban guns in their classrooms. Unlike Strong which has stated that his players cannot bring guns to the football facilities or at football functions.
I feel like the author is bringing the attention to the issue of guns on campus by stating the cases of banning guns for students shouldn't be just for Charlie Strong and his players. Every professor should be able to make the same decision for their students without punishment.

Accidental misfire at Tarleton State

A little less than two months after texas law allowed firearms to be carried inside university buildings there was an accidental discharge that happened inside of a Tarleton State University dormitory. The report stated that no one was injured in the accident.
An incident like this will raise a flag about firearm carry in universities. I myself am for the decision of letting students carry firearms in universities. Many are not comfortable with the law, but it gives them a sense of safety when on campus. You should give this article a read, because it can give insight for what can happen when not being safe when handling a firearm. Any will say that what happened in that dorm is why firearms should be on a university campus, but this can be a reason for individuals who are and want to carry a firearm to learn how to be a more responsible and safe firearm owner.
